The use of mineral water and spa in Spa resort "Shipkovski Mineral Baths" has a history of more than a hundred years and is closely related to the development of the village of Shipkovo. The resort is situated about 2 km of the same named village and about 18 km. west of Troyan. Thanks to its warm mineral springs, the village became known as a spa resort during the Revival, and in the far 1946 officially acquired the status of a resort.

The village of Shipkovo extends on the eastern slopes of the Vassilyovska Mountain - the highest part of the foothills of the Central Balkan Mountains. It is situated in the valleys of two small rivers, which gather together and form the river Razhdavets, flowing into the river Beli Osam, which runs through Troyan. The favorable geographical location (about 130 km from Plovdiv and 145 km from Sofia) makes it an easily accessible and attractive destination for mountain and spa tourism. The place relies on a profitable combination of unique natural resources, rich cultural and historical heritage and healing mineral springs.

Today Shipkovo offers a wide selection of accommodation (small hotels, villas, holiday homes and guest houses, bars and restaurants. There are also several areas zoned for summer houses  - "Gerkynia", "Krushevo" and "Konski Dol".

If you need treatment or just want to relax, you can take the advantage of the variety of treatments available at the resort. There are several boreholes and mineral springs in the territory of Shipkovo, with temperatures varying from 18 ° C to 35 ° C. The water is with proved medicinal qualities suitable for treatment of several major groups of diseases.

There are several outdoor pools in the resort (some of them with hot mineral water). In the center of the resort is built a four-spout fountain, which is fed by L-28 spring (for treatment of neurological and ocular diseases), L-2 (for the treatment of gastric, kidney and liver diseases) spring water and table mineral water.

Healing Properties of the mineral water:


Mineral water from spring L-1

Water from the first spring cures gastric and enteric diseases, hepatitis, bilious-and renalcalcus diseases by drinking it. After a tempering the water from this spring is used for treatment of degenerative or inflammatory joint diseases, diseases of the peripheral nervous system, orthopedic disorders. The healing properties of the water are unique to Northern Bulgaria.


Mineral water from spring L-2 

Water from spring L-2 cures endocrine (gout, diabetes), gastrointestinal (chronic gastritis, gastroduodenitis, ulcer, enterocolitis, postoperative conditions, etc.), hepatobiliary (cholelithiasis, chronic cholecystitis, cholangitis, cholangiohepatitis, biliary dyskinesia, post-operative conditions, etc.). 

When the water is used for inhalation it has a favorable effect on the following diseases:

  • The upper respiratory tract diseases (pharyngitis, laryngitis, etc.).
  • Pulmonary (lung) diseases (bronchitis, after pneumonia, etc.)


Mineral water from spring L-28 

Water from spring L-28 cures chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, hepatobiliary diseases, chronic ulcers, gastritis, colitis, cholelithiasis, uric acid kidney stones (drinking of this water is prescribed only by physician). Location: opposite “Ilinden” hotel.


Mineral water from spring L-36

Water from spring L-36 is used for treating procedures, balneotherapy (bath, tangents), swimming pools. It heals diseases of the musculoskeletal system and peripheral nervous system, discopathies, plexitis, post orthopedic trauma. The spring supplies the public pool and the Mineral Bath.


Mineral water from spring L-37

Water from spring L-37 (by drinking it) cures gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, renal and urological diseases, metabolic diseases, etc. When it is used for external application it is suitable for treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, peripheral nervous system or orthopedic diseases. The water may be bottled – it is characterized with a high salinity and hardness (100dH).
