Roman fortress "Sostra"

The fortress "Sostra" ("sostra" in ancient Greek means girdle, bandage, barrier) is the sixth road station along the Roman road" Via Trayana ", which connects the province of Lower Moesia with Thrace. It is situated south-east of village of Lomets, 12 km. north of the town of Troyan and 28 km. south of Lovech, in the valley of the Osam river.

The Roman roadside station and fortress Sostra are situated on a territory which, in the Pre-Roman period (1st millennium BC), is associated with the lands inhabited by a Thracian tribe. The roadside complex is built on an important military road connecting the cities of Colonia Escus (Gigen, Pleven) and Philippopolis (present-day Plovdiv) and thus, the road connects the two Roman provinces of Lower Moesia and Thrace. During the period I - V c. this road is among the busiest in trade and military terms.

The first archaeological research of the Roman complex is associated with the names of Dr. Georgi Kitov, Totyu Totevski, Assoc. Prof. Sergei Torbatov  and Assoc. Prof. Ivan Hristov Thanks to their work, large sections of the military camp, buildings from the civilian settlement, early Christian basilica, a ceramics furnace, a sanctuary of a Thracian god, a roadside station and others were studied.

The first organized archaeological excavations in the  of Sostra were held in 1979 under the guidance of Professor Georgi Kitov. Since 2002 under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Ivan Hristov, Deputy Director of the National Museum of History and in cooperation with the Municipality of Troyan and the Museum of Crafts, there are regular research and restoration activities. The excavations included silver coins, pots of clay and jewelery, etc. Some of the findings are exhibited at the Museum of Crafts - Troyan.

There is a road and a parking lot next to the fortress. There are currently no tourist services and no entry fees. Nearby there are railway and bus stops.
